NPWM2020 Contest Poem#20: For All Artists and Dreamers

We have more than one role, one being
and life will always ask us to be more.
It makes us forget, as we keep going,
that the magic is always in our core.

We aim to make things exist on a par
as we juggle our roles until we are sore.
And we have to keep moving to go far
and reach the peak that we strive for.

So we must remember to keep the magic
within flowing, growing, thriving, living
even when the body, mind, soul goes static
with crawling, moving, going, being.

NPWM2020 Contest Poem#19: Simple Reminders Whenever You’re Fighting Your Grade-A Demons with Only Your Fists

I. Anxiety
There are days that aren’t yours.
Take a deep breath. Let it go.
Let life take its due course.
If you dwell, you won’t grow.

II. Failure
No matter how far you fall,
you still have many rights to make.
Remember to stand up, stand tall.
you are never your mistake.

III. Imperfection
Perfection isn’t necessary
to stay alive and breathing.
Everybody’s extraordinary.
Everybody’s just living.

NPWM2020 Contest Poem#17: A Garden of Your Own

“Imagine yourself inside a garden
to be filled with your flowers and orchids.
Lock the door. Keep the garden’s key hidden
until you obtain what the garden needs.”

Let us start off with some red poppy seeds,
serves as remembrance for every mission.
Let us also get more cornflower breeds;
pray that it brings a better condition.

Put more hollyhocks to show ambition
to inspire us when the skies are gray
Build rhododendron walls for protection
from any danger that comes our way.

“But soldier, remember that you are free.
The war is over. You may go and be.”

NPWM2020 Contest Poem#16: Again and Again

I will meet you again
in the children’s playground
where our moms first met
and they’ll let us play together
until we become a set.

I will meet you again
wearing our school uniform,
waiting by your house gate
with the car ready to go
so we won’t be late.

I will meet you again
by the elementary school main entrance
after your rehearsals for violin
and my soccer practice games,
and swap sob stories and wins.

I will meet you again
in the high school chemistry lab
where you save me from a frog
who I thought is sedated,
and sleeping like a log.

I will meet you again
outside the hotel where we’ll have prom
even if you have Jenna in your arms,
and I don’t get to dance with you,
because Chad is showcasing his charms.

I will meet you again
after our graduation ceremony
where you’ll say you are leaving
to study elsewhere, somewhere far
and then, I’ll already start grieving.

I will meet you again
many years after, far from our town
in one of those quaint city bars
with both of us unaccompanied
and our stories never sparse.

I will meet you again
and become a matching set once more
which will bring the thrill of our mothers
and the new adventures we’ll share
as happy, sad, good, bad lovers.

I will meet you again
in that same playground
after years of happiness and fuss
with all the trials we’ll go through
and then, you’ll ask me to be “forever us”.

I will meet you again
in front of the church altar,
where we’ll say our vows
and promise to honor each other
with love that never bows.

I will meet you again
in many grand adventures of adulthood
which will test our patience
with lost jobs, hyper children, and tired sex
but will showcase our never-ending resilience.

I will meet you again
in this last adventure of our lives
where I’ll be outside waiting
– praying, hoping, believing –
only to find out that you’ll be leaving.

I will meet you again
in my dreams, where we’ll be together
after I recite this final eulogy
for everyone who’ll be left behind
and end this current tragedy.

NWPM2020 Contest Poem#15: Bubbles No Longer Filled with Sand

I find myself alone with my shy disposition
as my only company in a sea of strangers.
In order to grow, I find it my mission
to wade through this sea to find others
who are like me, shy, lost in their own bubbles.

I take my first step. I tap a shoulder
and give them my best foot, my biggest smile.
In return, I receive a glare, a question, a shudder.
I retreat, and realize this may take a while
as I find bubbles who are similar to mine.

As I hear laughter grow louder,
I see solitude filling my bubble with sand.
and watch people connect to each other
with linked arms, some hand-in-hand.
I wonder if I am not meant to find anyone.

And then, you come and say hello.
I turn around and see a really big smile,
offering me a hand, telling me to go
inside this bubble, with a sand pile
slowly carried out through a small hole.

I wade through the sand, take your hand,
let our bubbles merge as I go inside
and our bubbles, then, expand.
As our own laughter grows, I find
solitude collecting the restrictive sand.

I feel so happy and it shows,
seeing the sand slowly disperse
as our bubble grows and grows
with more people like us
whose bubbles were once filled with sand.

NPWM2020 Contest Poem#12: Reminders for the New Bloods, a college graduation poem

As you walk out the university door,
you’ll see there’s much more
battles, challenges, and adversaries
too hard to face, but come with worthy victories.

But never lose heart,
no matter how it tears you apart.

You must never lose your voice
to all of these world’s noise.
Continue to make yourself grow,
learning about life as you go.

NPWM2020 Contest Poem#11: Seventh Year Alone

We don’t have
many classes together,
given our different houses
throughout the years.

But I know you
– everyone does –
because your trio killed
everyone’s fears.

On our seventh year,
after the Second Wizarding War,
I see you in the library,
studying for an upcoming test.

I watch you for a while
and notice that you’re alone.
Where’s the other two
who usually ask you to rest?

I ask your house mate
and am told, “Harry and Ron didn’t go back.
She usually stays with Ginny but
she has Quidditch practice as of late.”

So I gather up my courage
– a trait of your house –
and approach you with a smile
and say, “Hi, want to grab something to eat?”

You look at me, and
you’re trying to guess
why this Hufflepuff is
right in front of you.

No one really wants to
bother you. The young ones
would rather stay away.
You have a lot to do.

Then, you smile and say,
“Sure, that would be great.”
